This bogus, malignant software has been around for a while now and shows no signs of slowing down. There’s new variants that carry the same payload. It’s also going after Vista now, and is just as capable and virulent there.
The software pretends to be a “free antivirus” program that will clean up your computer. In fact, just the opposite is true. It fools you into thinking that it’s doing things, when in reality the only thing it’s doing is infecting your system with Vundo and other malware/spamware. The pop-up window you see with all the things it’s found and wants to clean is actually just a script it runs. It’s an entirely bogus pop-up. To top that off, it then says you have to pay money to clean these things off your system! Don’t worry, LOTS have paid the money only to get deeper in trouble.
There are ways to clean it. The following set of steps will clean up your system. I recommend the use of Norman AntiVIrus, and these steps from Norman are what we use to clean up this problem. Of course, we recommend geting and using Norman Antivirus as your standard antivirus software. We find the Norman line of products to be very helpful, and less taxing on the computer resources.
To clean up Antivirus 2008 and it’s variants, follow the procedure below.
